The Sounds of Silence
The Sounds of Silence est une chanson du duo de folk rock américain Simon et Garfunkel. Elle est apparue sur leur premier album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., en 1964, dans une version où le chant n'était accompagné que par la guitare acoustique de Paul Simon. L'année suivante, leur producteur Tom Wilson produisit une version électrique de la chanson, sans même prévenir le duo, qui s'était séparé entre-temps après l'échec de leur premier album. Cette nouvelle version sortit en single en septembre 1965, et atteignit la première place du Billboard Hot 100 au début de l'année 1966. Ce succès incita Simon et Garfunkel à retravailler ensemble : leur deuxième album, appelé Sounds of Silence d'après la chanson, sortit en janvier 1966, avec la version électrique de The Sounds of Silence comme premier titre.
Son titre est orthographié The Sound of Silence sur certains albums, par exemple la bande originale du film Le Lauréat, qu'elle commence et conclut.
