The Baltimore Sun est un journal quotidien de la ville de Baltimore dans l'État du Maryland aux États-Unis.

Il fut fondé le 17 mai 1837 par l'imprimeur Arunah Shepherdson Abell et deux associés. La famille Abell garda la tête de la compagnie jusqu’en 1910. Le journal fut vendu en 1986 à la compagnie de californienne Times-Mirror Company qui le détient encore aujourd'hui.

Le journal a connu comme de nombreux journaux un déclin de ses lecteurs pour diverses raisons dont l'apparition d'un nouveau quotidien gratuit nommé The Baltimore Examiner[1]. En 2000, Times-Mirror company fut racheté par la Tribune Company de Chicago. Le 19 septembre 2005, le journal transforma son design.

Editions

Bien qu'il n'y ait plus maintenant qu’une seule édition, il y avait deux éditions par jour dans le passé dénommées The Sun le matin et The Evening Sun l’après-midi. Le quotidien Evening Sun fut publié de 1910 jusqu'au 15 septembre 1995.

Parmi les rédacteurs et les membres des équipes de rédaction on retrouve: Russell Baker, John Carroll, Turner Catledge, Price Day, Edmund Duffy, J. Fred Essary, Thomas Flannery, Jack Germond, Gerald W. Johnson, Kevin P. Kallaugher, Frank R. Kent, William Manchester, H.L. Mencken, Hamilton Owens, Drew Pearson, Louis Rukeyser, David Simon, Raymond S. Tompkins, Paul W. Ward, Mark Watson, Jules Witcover, et Richard Q. Yardley. Le journal a remporté 15 prix Pulitzer.

Controverse

Le journal fut impliqué dans une controverse impliquant le gouverneur du Maryland Robert Ehrlich Jr. Bien que la controverse se soit calmée suite à l'élection du nouveau gouverneur Martin O'Malley, le journal est toujours en attente d’une décision de justice.
