The Top est le cinquième album du groupe The Cure sorti en 1984. C'est le premier depuis deux ans, après la série des trois singles Let's Go To Bed, The Walk et The Lovecats compilés sur Japanese Whispers.
Le successeur de Pornography tranche avec l'ambiance sombre des trois précédents albums. Sur la lancée des singles, le groupe continue sur une voie plus pop en développant un côté psychédélique (sur Bananafishbones ou Wailing Wall par exemple) déjà expérimenté par Robert Smith dans le projet The Glove.
L'instrumentation est particulièrement variée, on peut entendre entre autres un violon, un harmonica, une flute indienne ou un tambour qui viennent se mêler aux instruments plus habituels utilisés par un groupe de rock.
Et c'est Robert Smith qui joue de pratiquement tous les instruments, excepté la batterie. En effet le bassiste Phil Thornalley est absent des séances d'enregistrement, occupé au poste d'ingénieur du son sur l'album Seven and the Ragged Tiger de Duran Duran[1]. Porl Thompson qui vient d'intégrer le groupe ne joue que du saxophone sur le titre Give Me It. Andy Anderson est à la batterie, tandis que Lol Tolhurst est simplement crédité: "autres instruments".

Cet album est enregistré alors que Robert Smith est toujours le guitariste de Siouxsie and the Banshees. Parallèlement, il enregistre l'album Hyaena avec ces derniers. Cependant il quittera définitivement les Banshees peu après la sortie de The Top[1].

The Top sera suivi fin 1984 par un album live simplement intitulé Concert.

En 2006 est publiée une édition remastérisée avec un deuxième CD contenant des titres inédits et des versions démos ou en concert des morceaux de l'album et du single The Caterpillar.
