L'Invitée de l'hiver (The Winter Guest) est un film américano-britannique réalisé par Alan Rickman en 1997 et sorti l'année suivante.

Synopsis

Dans un petit port d'Écosse, Frances, qui vient de perdre son mari, se laisse envahir par le désespoir, malgré la présence de son fils, qui doit lui aussi reconstruire sa vie avec la présence étouffante de ce père décédé. Il y a également Elspeth, la mère de Frances, qui, malgré des rapports conflictuels avec sa fille, tente de lui redonner le goût de la vie. Ce film intimiste nous montre la vie difficile de huit personnages qui ont décidé d'affronter la mort (l'"invitée" dont parle le titre) sans pour autant renoncer à la vie.

Le film est servi par un casting irréprochable, notamment avec le face à face entre Emma Thompson et sa mère dans la vie et dans le film, l'actrice Phyllida Law (comme précédemment dans Raison et Sentiments, d'Ang Lee). Leur relation donne une profondeur psychologique au film qui se révèle être un petit chef-d'œuvre de pudeur et d'optimiste, dans les paysages magnifiques d'Écosse.
