Les Thériodontes (Theriodontia) forment un groupe de "reptiles mammaliens" qui sont apparus au milieu du Permien et qui incluent les mammifères.

Ils ont des articulations de mâchoire où l’ os articulaire  ⇔  merci d’apporter votre expertise, et de préciser de la mâchoire inférieure est solidement attaché à l’os carré du crâne. La réduction de taille de l’os carré est une étape importante vers le développement de la mâchoire et de l’oreille interne de type mammifère. Cela permet une plus grande ouverture de la gueule et l'un des groupes de Thériodontes, les gorgonopsiens, carnivores, ont pu développer « des dents de sabre ».

Les mammifères sont des euthériodontes.

Étymologie

Theriodontia dérive du grec ancien theria et de odontia qui signifie respectivement "bête" et "dent".
