Région géographique limitrophe située entre l´ouest et le nord du Mali, l'Azawad recoupe la zone Sahèlienne du Mali. Elle est les berceaux de la civilisation Touaregue qui partage la zone et qui constitue un brassage culturelle dans l'Azawad.
Elle comporte essentiellement les régions maliennes de Tombouctou et de Kidal, auxquelles s'ajoute une petite partie de la région de Gao.
- Azawak est l´appellation nigérienne du bassin de l'Azawagh, lui-même un affluent fossile du fleuve Niger coulant dans le pays éponyme, puis au Mali et dont le nom s'est étendu à tout le bassin.
