Le district londonien de Tower Hamlets (« London Borough of Tower Hamlets ») est un district de Grand Londres. Cette circonscription, fondée en 1965 par fusion des districts de Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney, compte plus de 206 000 habitants (2003).

Tower Hamlets forme une grande partie de l'East End. Globalement, il s'agit d'une circonscription pauvre. La population immigrée y est importante, principalement la population d'origine bengalie qui représentait sans doute plus de 30% de la population en 2005[1]. Le quartier de Spitalfieds est surnommé Bangla Town.

Dans le Sud du borough, sur les bords de la Tamise, se trouvait le quartier des docks qui fournissait du travail à une part importante de la population, toutefois, les activités portuaires ont décliné puis cessé dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. A Canary Wharf, un important quartier d'affaires a été installé sur les anciennes installation portuaires à partir des années 1980. Cependant, fonctionnellement, ce centre tertiare est relativement isolé du reste du borough[réf. nécessaire].

Certains sites des Jeux olympiques de 2012 seront également localisés dans ce borough.

Population

D'après le recensement de 2001, Tower Hamlets avait une population de 196 106 habitants, dont 51% de "Blancs", 33% de Bangladeshis, 3% d'Africains noirs et 3% d'Antillais noirs. 29% de la population est propriétaire de son logement. Avec 36,4%, c'est la localité britannique qui compte le pourcentage le plus élevé de musulmans.
