Transatlantic est un supergroupe de rock progressif formé en 1999 par le chanteur/claviériste Neal Morse de Spock's Beard et le batteur Mike Portnoy de Dream Theater.

Le groupe devait au départ inclure le guitariste Jim Matheos de Fates Warning, mais celui-ci n'a finalement pas été en mesure de participer au projet. Morse et Portnoy l'ont remplacé par Roine Stolt, le chanteur/guitariste de The Flower Kings. Le groupe est aussi composé du bassiste Pete Trewavas du groupe Marillion

Leur premier album (double), SMPTe (2000), a reçu d'excellentes critiques : Robert Taylor de All Music Guide ([1]) écrit : « Une des meilleures musique rock progressive jamais écrite ! » cet album a été suivi par le Live in America (2001), puis l'album Bridge Across Forever (2001), et enfin le Live in Europe (2003).

Les grandes caractéristiques du groupe, plutôt fréquentes dans le style progressif, tels que des chansons longues (25 à 30 minutes pour les plus longues), des morceaux à thèmes ou s'enchaîne différentes ambiances musicales, une recherche musicale et harmonique (mesures composées, chœurs harmonisés autour du chant principal, utilisation de nombreux effets sonores, ...), l'utilisation de synthétiseurs, l'utilisation d'instruments classiques ou d'autres excentricités donnent une vraie personnalité au son Transatlantic.

Le groupe a récemment annoncé son retour et la préparation d'un nouvel album.
