La Téthys est un paléo-océan qui s'est ouvert d'Est en Ouest du Permien supérieur au Jurassique moyen. Il s'est formé à travers la Pangée, séparant les continents Gondwana au Sud, et Laurasia au Nord. La terminaison occidentale de cet océan était l'actuelle Europe du Sud et l'actuelle Afrique du Nord.
Évolution
Il y a un peu plus de 65 à 55 millions d'années, un morceau de Gondwana s'est détaché pour former la plaque tectonique qui deviendra la future Inde. Ce bloc, continuant son parcours, a fini par se rapprocher de l'Eurasie, jusqu'à la collision entraînant la fin de Téthys et la naissance de l'Himalaya. La fermeture de cet océan mésozoïque a donc vraisemblablement commencé dès le Crétacé supérieur. Totale entre l'Inde et l'Asie, il y a environ 45 millions d'années, elle perdure toujours entre l'Eurasie et l'Afrique. La Méditerranée est un des derniers vestiges océaniques de la Téthys. La fermeture récente de l'Isthme de Panama, il y a environ 3 millions d'années, entre l'Amérique du Nord et l'Amérique du Sud, signe peut-être aussi cette convergence générale.
