Uitenhage est une ville de la province du Cap-Oriental, en Afrique du Sud, qui fait partie de la Métropole Nelson Mandela organisée autour de la ville de Port Elizabeth. Elle est située à 30 km au nord-ouest de Port Elizabeth.
Histoire
Fondée en le 25 avril 1804 par le magistrat Jacob Glen Cuyler, la ville est baptisée du nom du commissaire-général de la colonie du Cap Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist. Uitenhage fit d’abord partie du district de Graaff-Reinet avant de devenir une municipalité en 1877.
En 1994, Uitenhage fut incluse avec Port Elizabeth dans la conurbation municipale baptisée métropole Nelson Mandela (Nelson Mandela Metropole) en 2000.
Économie
Depuis 1951 l'usine Volkswagen de Uitenhage fabrique des moteurs, des automobiles, des autobus ainsi que des camions. L'usine a produit 2,5 millions d'automobiles de 1951 à 2007 [1]. Elle emploie 5 600 salariés et produit environ 100 000 véhicules par an, ce qui en fait la plus grande usine automobile du continent africain[2].
