Définition

Une variable est quantitative si on peut calculer un total pour un ensemble d'individus.

Le poids d'individus est quantitatif, puisque si plusieurs individus montent sur une balance, leur masse totale est la somme de leurs masses individuelles. Par contre la variable étage d'un ensemble de logements, bien que mesurée par un nombre, n'est pas une quantité : on ne peut pas faire un total avec les étages de plusieurs logements.

Les variables quantitatives s'opposent aux variables qualitatives, pour lesquelles le calcul d'un total associé à plusieurs individus à partir de leurs valeurs individuelles ne peut pas résulter d'une opération mathématique.
