Vugar Gashimov (en azéri : Vüqar Həşimov, en russe : Вугар Гашимов), né le 24 juillet 1986 à Bakou (RSS d'Azerbaïdjan, URSS), est un grand maître azerbaïdjanais du jeu d'échecs. Il a été champion national à trois reprises, en 1995, 1996 et 1998[1].

Biographie

En 1998, il devient maître international et remporte le titre de grand maître quatre ans plus tard. Il décroche quatre médailles de bronze aux championnat du monde de la jeunesse, en 1996, 1998, 1999 et 2000. En 1999, il est le vainqueur de la Coupe Kasparov dans la catégorie des moins de seize ans.

Il a remporté le tournoi Acropolis d'Athènes en 2005[2] et an août 2006 il est premier du tournoi d'Abou Dabi, devant 19 grands maîtres. Au 50e tournoi de Reggio Emilia, il finit 2e ex æquo.

En 2008, il gagne l'Open de Cappelle-la-Grande avec un score de 7/9 au départage.

Après quatre des six tournois du Grand Prix FIDE 2008-2009, il est cinquième au classement général.

Il remporte le tournoi de Reggio Emilia en 2011[3].

Gashimov a défendu les couleurs de son pays aux Olympiades d'échecs en 2002, 2004, 2006 et 2008[4]

Au 1er mai 2011, il est le 10e joueur mondial, avec un classement Elo de 2 760 points.
