Quel effet cela fait-il d'être une chauve-souris ?
En 1974, le philosophe Thomas Nagel a écrit un célèbre article intitulé « Quel effet cela fait d’être une chauve-souris ? » (What is it like to be a bat ?). Il y développe l’argument selon lequel nous n’avons absolument aucun moyen de savoir ce que c’est qu’être une chauve-souris : le seul moyen d'y répondre serait d’être soi-même une chauve-souris. Ainsi les qualia échappent-ils à l’analyse et donc, selon lui, l’investigation scientifique de la conscience est impossible.
