Le Whitney Museum of American Art est une galerie d'art et un musée de New York, fondé en 1931 par Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.

Historique

Le Whitney Museum est particulièrement réputé pour ses collections d'art contemporain, souvent encore plus à jour que celles du Museum of Modern Art. Sa traditionnelle exposition biennale permet de faire connaître au plus grand nombre des artistes américains émergents.

Le peintre Edward Hopper a légué une grande partie de ses œuvres au Whitney Museum.

En plus de ses collections habituelles, le musée héberge un portail internet, "Net Art". L'un des bâtiments a été construit par Marcel Breuer, en 1966 en béton : couvert de parements en granit, il offre une structure en porte-à-faux et semble fermé à toute influence extérieure. L'architecte a voulu créer des volumes simples et sans ornementation, conformément au Style international.

Collections

Le musée possède une importante collection de peintures d'Edward Hopper, et une salle entière dédiée aux mobiles d'Alexander Calder. Parmi les autres pièces du musée se trouvent notamment des œuvres de Robert Henri, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Maurice Prendergast, Knox Martin, Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Josef Albers, Kenneth Noland, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Hart Benton, Louise Nevelson, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Louise Bourgeois, Hans Hofmann, Stuart Davis, Man Ray, William Eggleston, Robert Rauschenberg, George Wesley Bellows...
