William Cuffay (1788 - 1870) est un leader chartiste londonien.

Éléments biographiques

Le père de William Cuffay était un ancien esclave devenu cuisinier de la British Navy dans le Kent.

Le premier métier de William Cuffay fut tailleur, emploi qu'il perdit à la suite d'une grève en 1834. Lors de la première vague chartiste en 1839, il contribua à la création de la Metropolitan Taylor's Charter Association, une organisation syndicaliste en faveur de la Charte populaire. En 1842, son expérience en tant que leader du mouvement des tailleurs lui valut d'être nommé membre de la National Charter Association puis, plus tard la même année, au poste de président.

Chef de file chartiste

William Cuffay participa à l'organisation du grand rassemblement chartiste de Kennington Common du 10 avril 1848, mais il fut déçu par la passivité des autres leaders qui ne voulurent pas faire de ce rassemblement une démonstration de force. Il forma par la suite une faction plus violente dans la mouvance chartiste.

Arrestation et bagne

Suite à la trahison d'un espion du gouvernement, Cuffay fut arrêté et accusé d'avoir fomenté une insurrection armée. Malgré le concours de l'éminent juriste John Walter Huddleston, il fut reconnu coupable d'avoir prémédité une série d'incendies volontaires qui auraient servi de signal de départ au soulèvement et fut condamné à 21 ans de bagne en Tasmanie.

Il fut grâcié trois ans plus tard mais passa le reste de sa vie en Tasmanie où il repris son activité de tailleur tout en s'impliquant dans la politique au niveau local toujours avec les mêmes idées radicales.

Le discours qu'il fit lors de son procès fut récemment[Quand ?] exposé au Museum of London.
