William Douglas-Home

William Douglas-Home (3 Juin 1912, Edinburgh – 28 Septembre 1992, Winchester) fut un soldat britannique entre juillet 1940 et septembre 1944. Il a été emprisonné pour avoir refusé de participer à la destruction du Havre durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Il devint ensuite un auteur très populaire au Royaume-Uni.

Famille et éducation

Douglas-Home fut le troisième fils de Alec Douglas-Home et de Lady Lilian Lambton. Son frère aîné fut Alec Douglas-Home, Premier ministre du Royaume Uni en 1963 et 1964.

Mariage

Le 26 juillet 1951, il épousa Rachl Douglas-Home, la fille de Thomas Brand et de Leila Emily Seely. Ils ont eu 4 enfants.

Service militaire

Malgré son opposition à la politique gouvernementale d'exiger une capitulation sans condition à l'Allemagne Nazi,il a été enregistré à l'armée en Juillet 1940 et a du rejoindre le Royal East Kent Regiment. Lorsqu'il fut officier, il participa également à trois élections partielles.

En 1944, Douglas-Home fut un officier dans le 141e Régiment lors de la bataille de Normandie. Ce régiment fut le premier à être équipé de chars lance-flammes nommés Churchill Crocodile.

Douglas-Home refusa de participé à l'opération Astonia consistant à la capture du port du Havre par les Alliés car la population civile n'avait pas reçu l'autorisation d'évacuer. Il envoya ensuite une lettre à un journal britannique pour s'en expliquer, et cela lui valu une audition devant la court martiale.

Douglas Home fut condamné à un an d'emprisonnement et à du travail forcé. Son jugement ne dura que deux heures.
