William Golding

William Golding est un écrivain britannique appartenant au courant postmoderniste. Il est né le 19 septembre 1911 en Cornouailles (Angleterre) et mort le 19 juin 1993. Il a obtenu le Prix Nobel de littérature en 1983.

Biographie

Fils d'instituteur, il fréquente l'école de Marlborough et poursuit ses études à Oxford où il obtient son diplôme de littérature anglaise. Il travaille ensuite quelque temps dans un petit théâtre en tant qu'auteur, acteur et producteur. Il devient professeur d'anglais et de philosophie à Salisbury en 1939. Marié en 1939 et père de deux enfants, il est mobilisé en 1940 dans la marine et participe au débarquement sur les côtes françaises. Il reprend son poste à Salisbury de 1945 à 1962, date à laquelle il se retire à la campagne dans les environs de Salisbury pour se consacrer à ses travaux littéraires.

Il est également connu pour avoir proposé au scientifique et ami James Lovelock la terminologie de Gaia "Gaia: a new outlock at Life on earth" (première édition 1979), du nom de la déesse grecque de la Terre, synonyme de biosphère et géomorphologie dans les sciences naturelles et de Mère Nature dans les mouvements ésotériques.

Ses romans ont souvent traité du mal, de l'opposition entre la barbarie instinctive de l'homme et l'influence civilisatrice de la raison.

Ces thèmes sont particulièrement marquant dans son premier roman Sa Majesté des mouches (1954) qui reste son livre le plus connu.
