William Henry Davies est un poète et écrivain gallois. Il est né en 1871 à Newport dans le Monmouthshire et mort en 1940.

Il eut une jeunesse difficile et sombra dans la délinquance. Après l'échec de son établissement en tant qu'apprenti, il voyagea, vivant de travaux temporaires. En 1908, il publia The autobiography of a Super-Tramp (Autobiographie d'un super-clochard), compte-rendu de sa vie aux États-Unis entre 1893 et 1899. En sautant d'un train, au Canada, il perdit un pied, et porta par la suite une jambe de bois.

Il retourna en Angleterre, menant une vie difficile, en particulier à Londres. Son premier recueil de poèmes, en 1905, marqua le début de son succès et de sa réputation ; il y décrit essentiellement son expérience personnelle et ses côtés les moins reluisants. Il fut reconnu par le public à partir de la publication de la série d'anthologies Georgian poetry, de Edward Marsh, où ses écrits occupaient une place de choix. Il est généralement plus connu pour ces deux vers du poème "Leisure" (Loisirs) :

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?
Qu'est-ce que cette vie si, à tant s'inquiéter,
Il n'est de temps pour s'arrêter et contempler?

Il se maria en 1923 à Helen Payne, une ex-prostituée et plus jeune que lui d'une trentaine d'années ; ses explications franches à ce sujet furent seulement publiées en 1980. Ils vécurent calmement dans le Sussex et à Gloucestershire.
