Wittiza

Wittiza (ou Vitiza) est un roi wisigoth d'Espagne régnant de 698/702 à 709/710. Fils du roi Égica, ce dernier le nomme duc de Galice et régent de Tui (Galice). À partir de 698, son père l'associe au pouvoir, tentant probablement d'imposer sa dynastie.

Avec la mort du vieux roi Égica en décembre 702, il règne seul sur un royaume hispano-wisigothique décadent, ruiné, et surtout miné par d'incessantes intrigues orchestrées par une noblesse turbulente complotant contre le pouvoir, provoquant de nombreuses divisions et guerres civiles. Sous son règne se déroule le XVIIIe Concile de Tolède, probablement en 703, concile présidé par l'archevêque Gundéric de Tolède.

Sa fin reste mystérieuse. A-t-il était déposé ou renversé par Rodéric ? Tué dans la cohue, ou exécuté peu après, ou encore assassiné dans son exil ? Est-il mort avant la prise du pouvoir de ce même Rodéric ? On le dit aussi mort naturellement âgé de 30 ans environ, laissant trois jeunes fils, dont Agila (Agila II), qui sera évincé par Rodéric, et Ardabast.
