Berkhamsted est une cité historique situé à l'ouest du Hertfordshire entre les villes de Tring et Hemel Hempstead.

Le nom de la ville a été écrit de différentes manière au cours des années. Son orthographe actuelle date de 1937. Auparavant, il pouvait être écrit Berkhampstead, Muche Barkhamstede, Berkhamsted Magna, Great Berkhamsted ou Berkhamstead. C'est un nom dérivé du vieil anglais, Beorhoanstadde[1]. La ville est aussi surnommée "Berko".

Le ville est le siège du British Film Institute, une des plus grande réserve d'archives mondiale, notamment grâce à John Paul Getty.

Histoire

La ville est inscrite au Domesday Book en 1086, après l'invasion de l'Angleterre par Guillaume le Conquérant[2].

Château

Le château de Berkhamsted est un château normand construit à l'origine par les Saxons dans les années 1080. Il est situé près de l'actuelle gare.

Jumelage

La ville est jumelée avec Beaune en France et Neu-Isenburg en Allemagne.
