Firelight est un film de science fiction de 1964 écrit et réalisé par Steven Spielberg alors qu'il avait 16 ans pour un budget de $500. Ce film fut son premier succès commercial du fait qu'il engrangea un bénéfice de $1. "J'ai compté les recettes de cette nuit là : nous avions facturé un dollar par billet. Cinq cents personnes sont venues pour le film et je crois que quelqu'un a probablement payé deux dollars, car nous avons fait un profit de un dollar cette nuit-là"[1]

Synopsis

Firelight suit un groupe de scientifiques - en particulier Tony Karcher et Howard Richards - Alors qu'ils enquêtent sur une série de lumières dans le ciel et sur la disparition de personnes, d'animaux et d'objets de la ville fictive américaine de Freeport, dans l'Arizona. Parmi les personnes enlevées par les Aliens on compte un chien, une unité de soldats et une jeune fille, Lisa, dont l'enlèvement cause une crise cardiaque à sa mère. Spielberg, preuve d'une maturité à l'adolescence, a inclus la discorde conjugale entre Karcher et son épouse Debbie, ainsi que la quête obsessionnelle de Richards pour convaincre la CIA que la vie extraterrestre n'existe pas. La fin révèle que les Aliens, représentés par trois ombres, révèlent leur but : le transport de Freeport à leur planète, Altaris, d'êtres humains afin de créer un zoo humain.

Casting

Beaucoup des acteurs de Firelight vient de l'Arcadia High school productions. La sœur de Spielberg obtient un second rôle.

Production et musique

Spielberg composa la musique pour Firelight, sa première bande-originale, avec sa clarinette. La mère de Spielberg, pianiste, transposa la musique au piano. L'Arcadia High School band enregistra la musique.

Le film fut tourné les week-ends et les soirs. Beaucoup de scènes furent tournés chez Spielberg et à côté de son garage.
