Genichiro Tenryu (天龍源一郎, Tenryū Gen'ichirō?), de son vrai nom Genichiro Shimada (嶋田源一郎, Shimada Gen'ichirō?) est un catcheur japonais né le 2 février 1950. À l'âge de 13 ans, il entre à l'école des sumos et s'entraîne durant 13 ans, puis part dans le catch. « Shikona » est son nom de sumo.

Carrière

Début

Débute comme sumo est atteint le niveau de sekitori pour 27 tournois, 16 au top makuuchi division. Son plus haut rang est Maegashira 1. Il se retire du sumo en septembre 1976 à l'âge de 26 ans, il quitte la Japan Sumo Association.

All Japan Pro Wrestling

Il est engagé par Giant Baba, le propriétaire de la All Japan Pro Wrestling, Tenryu par pour Amarillo afin de s'entraîner avec Dory Funk, Jr. et Terry Funk, et débute au Texas en 1976, face à Ted DiBiase. En 1983, il part pour la promotion de la Jim Crockett.

En 1984, Tenryu s'empare de la ceinture NWA United National, maintenant l'une des ceintures de la Triple Crown, comme le NWA International tag team avec Tsuruta. L'équipe s'appelle "Kakuryu" (鶴 = kaku = tsuru (le "tsuru" de Tsuruta) + 龍 = ryū de Tenryū). L'équipe s'attaque à Riki Chōshū et Yoshiaki Yatsu. En 1987, participe à la Japan Pro talent, Kakuryu perd face au champions Road Warriors, Tenryu décide former sa propre écurie, "Revolution", avec des catcheurs International comme Ashura Hara et Hiromichi Fuyuki, comme des rookies de la All Japan, Toshiaki Kawada et Yoshinari Ogawa. Tenryu et Hara démarre une rivalité face à Tsuruta et Yatsu, la Double Cup tag team (combination de la PWF et de la ceinture International tag). Hara est viré de la promotion en 1988, et Tenryu le remplace alors avec Stan Hansen.

En 1989, Tsuruta devient le premier Triple Crown champion le 18 avril, et deux jours après, Tenryu deviens son challenger no 1. Les matchs Tsuruta-Tenryu sont des vrais classic des matchs Triple Crown. Quand Tenryu s'empare le 5 juin du titre. Tenryu fait partie des NWA World 6-Man Tag Team Champions avec les Road Warriors[1], le titre six man championship est abandonné en 1991, par la World Championship Wrestling.

World Wrestling Fédération

Tenryu catche à la World Wrestling Federation en 1991 à WrestleMania VII, où il fait équipe avec Koji Kitao et battent Demolition. Il catche aussi au 1993 Royal Rumble et 1994 Royal Rumble ; durant le dernier, il est dans les 5 derniers mais se fait éliminer par les co-vainqueurs Lex Luger et Bret Hart. Lui et The Great Kabuki sont des mercenaires du manager de Yokozuna, Mr. Fuji, pour attaquer Luger.

Circuit indépendant

En 1990, Tenryu quitte la All Japan pour la SWS. En 1992, Tenryu, aide Masatomo Takei (frère de sa femme Makiyo) pour mettre en place la WAR. À la WAR, il devient l'un des meilleurs catcheurs, comme Atsushi Onita, Nobuhiko Takada, The Great Muta, Shinya Hashimoto, Dino Ventura et Masahiro Chono, qu'il bat. Il a aussi remporté des matchs face à Tatsumi Fujinami et Antonio Inoki.

En 1998, lors du déclin de la WAR, Tenryu fait son comeback.

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Il s'allie avec Shiro Koshinaka, et remporte les ceintures IWGP tag team belts from Team Wolf, Masa Chono and Hiroyoshi Tenzan. En décembre 1999, Tenryu est le premier catcheur à remporter les deux plus importantes ceintures du Japon (All Japan Triple Crown et la New Japan IWGP heavyweight) en battant Muta pour la ceinture IWGP.

Retour à la All Japan Pro Wrestling

En 2000, lorsque les catcheurs de la All Japan partent afin de créer la Pro Wrestling Noah, Tenryu ferme la WAR et retourne à la All Japan. Tenryu bat Kawada dans un tournoi pour la ceinture Triple Crown, et la remporte une seconde fois. Il s'empare de la ceinture une troisième fois et remporte la Double Cup avec son rival de la WAR-UWFI Yoji Anjo.

Pro Wrestling Noah

En 2003, il rejoint la World Japan pour plusieurs matchs. En 2005, il entre à la Noah, et démarre une rivalité avec Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, et plusieurs catcheurs de la All Japan. Tenryu catche aussi avec la fédération HUSTLEn. Durant cette époque, il fait équipe avec Kawada. À HUSTLE Aid 2007, Tenryu est battu par Razor Ramon HG et rejoint le groupe de Razor Ramon HG.
