Dans le domaine de la zoologie, l' hibernaculum (du nom latin pour la tente romaine utilisée pour les « quartiers d'hiver ») est le refuge, le gîte ou la partie d'un terrier qui sert à l'hibernation d'un animal (seul, comme l'ours dans sa tanière, ou d'un groupe social et familial, dans le cas de la marmotte marmota marmota par exemple) [1],[2].
Au pluriel, il faut théoriquement employer le mot hibernacula.

Le mot peut désigner un grand nombre de lieux, pour des insectes, amphibiens, chauve-souris, serpents, etc.
Enjeux
Une meilleure connaissance et la protection de ces habitats particuliers a une grande importance pour la biologie de la conservation et la sauvegarde de nombreuses d'espèces menacées (certaines communautés saproxylophages nécessitant de gros bois-morts, d'essences variées, habitat est de plus en plus rare dans les forêts entretenues et cultivées).
Hivernage des papillons
Les germanophone utilisent le mot hibernarium pour aussi désigner l'étui de feuilles et soie que certaines chenilles de papillons utilisent pour passer l'hiver (développement du dernier stade larvaire).
