Joe Paterno, né le 21 décembre 1926 à New York, est un ancien joueur américain de football américain universitaire devenu entraîneur des Penn State Nittany Lions. Il est l'un des rares personnes encore en activité à avoir déjà intégré le College Football Hall of Fame.

Carrière universitaire

Joe Paterno intègre la prestigieuse Université Brown en 1946, il va jouer aux postes de quaterback et cornerback pendant quatre saisons avant de rejoindre l'Université de Penn State et commencer une très longue carrière d'entraîneur.

Entraîneur

Entraineur assistant entre 1950 et 1965, il a occupé entre 1966 et 2011 le poste d'entraîneur (head coach) chez les Penn State Nittany Lions.

Palmarès et records

Joe Paterno détient plusieurs records notamment du fait de sa carrière d'entraîneur exceptionnellement longue. Ainsi, il compte avant la saison 2010, 394 victoires (record), pour 129 défaites et 3 nuls, soit un pourcentage de victoire de 75 % en NCAA. Paterno détient également le plus grand nombre de victoires en bowl avec 24 (record).
