Morris Fuller Benton

Morris Fuller Benton, né le 30 novembre 1872 à Milwaukee (Wisconsin), mort le 30 juin 1938 à Morristown (New Jersey), est un créateur de caractères américain, l'un des plus prolifiques dans l'histoire de la création typographique.

Biographie

Il est le fils de Linn Boyd Benton, ingénieur et fondeur, un des fondateurs de l'American Type Founders, créée en 1862 par l'association de 23 fonderies américaines, qui invente le pantographe à graver les poinçons. Cette machine peut graver des poinçons à n'importe quelle échelle à partir d'un modèle, mais aussi en appliquant des déformations programmées en largeur, hauteur, inclinaison : toutes opérations mathématiques appliquées aux caractères typographiques par les langages informatiques actuels comme PostScript.

Morris Fuller Benton suit des études d'ingénieur à la Cornell University. En 1896, il intègre ATF et Il travaille avec son père sur les machines qu'il a inventées, les amenant à un degré extrême de précision.

En 1900, il devient directeur artistique de la fonderie. Jusqu'en 1937 il produit sans discontinuer des polices devenues des classiques, ses propres créations et des déclinaisons de polices existantes.
