Robert Waelder est un psychanalyste qui a commencé sa carrière en Autriche, son pays d'origine et l'a terminé aux USA où il a émigré en 1938. Il a fait ses analyses de formation avec Robert Hans Jokl, Hermann Nunberg et Anna Freud dont il était devenu un fervent défenseur face à sa rivale Mélanie Klein. Il a été très actif au sein de la Société viennoise de psychanalyse. En dehors de ses ardentes attaques contre les kleiniens et sur le plan politique, il était considéré par nombre de ses collègues (Sterba notamment) comme "réactionnaire et capitaliste" mais était par contre très estimé pour vaste savoir psychanalytique.
