Le St. Joseph and Grand Island Railway est une ligne de chemin de fer américaine située dans le Nebraska. Cette compagnie, créée en 1897, fit partie des chemin de fer américain de classe I.
Historique
Lorsque le St. Joseph and Western Railroad acheva la construction de la ligne entre Hastings (Nebraska) et Grand Island (Nebraska), il fut réorganisé en St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad en 1879. Une nouvelle ville fut créée à mi chemin entre Hastings et Grand Island, et fut baptisée Doniphan (Nebraska) en hommage à l'avocat des chemins de fer, John Doniphan. La compagnie fut rebaptisée St. Joseph and Grand Island Railway en 1897.
Au cours de son existence, le SJ&GI fit principalement partie de l'Union Pacific Railroad. Lorsque l'UP décida de construire un raccourci entre Hastings et Gibbon (Nebraska) en 1914, l'utilisation de la ligne du SJ&GI au nord d'Hastings déclina graduellement. La plus grande partie de la ligne fut abandonnée en 1989. Le seul petit segment de ligne qui reste en activité relie la ligne principale de l'UP à la centrale thermique au sud de Grand Island. Cette centrale reçoit 2 à 3 convois de charbon par semaine.
