Il s'agit du premier film écrit par Wentworth Miller, héros de la série Prison Break. C'est dans le courant du mois de juin 2010 que les noms de Carey Mulligan et Jodie Foster ont été annoncés comme pouvant être les personnages principaux. Fin janvier 2011, on apprend que les deux actrices quittent le projet, et que Mulligan serait remplacée par Mia Wasikowska et Jodie Foster par Nicole Kidman.
