The Family Way est la bande originale du film du même nom (1966) composée par le Beatle Paul McCartney et sortie en 1967. La musique a été composée par McCartney en collaboration avec le producteur des Beatles George Martin.

Cet album est parfois considéré comme le premier album solo d'un Beatle, mais plusieurs critiques musicaux considèrent Wonderwall Music de George Harrison comme étant le premier, même s'il est sorti plus tard, en janvier 1968.

Genèse et enregistrement

La musique du film a été composée et enregistrée pendant une pause dans la carrière des Beatles, entre leurs albums Revolver et Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ; le groupe vient alors d'arrêter les concerts, John Lennon tourne le film How I Won the War en Espagne, George Harrison se trouve à Bombay pour assister aux enseignements du musicien indien Ravi Shankar et Ringo Starr finance une entreprise de construction de bâtiments, Bricky Builder. McCartney amorce donc son premier projet solo en collaboration avec George Martin, le producteur des Beatles, suite à la visite de Roy Boulting, réalisateur avec son frère du film The Family Way.

Intitulé Wedlocked or All in Good Times lors du tournage, le projet sera présenté à McCartney par Boulting. Intéressé par le projet, le bassiste acceptera de collaborer en voyant cette aventure comme un prolongement intéressant à son travail de compositeur ; ses habituelles chansons de trois minutes devront être plus longues et ses orchestrations plus élaborées.
