Theocracy est un groupe de power metal progressif chrétien américain créé en 2002 par Matt Smith à Athens, Géorgie.

Biographie

À ses débuts, le groupe était en fait un one man band ; tous les parties instrumentales et vocales du premier album éponyme ont été enregistrées par Matt Smith. La formation est aujourd'hui enrichie de Shawn Benson, Jonathan Hinds et Val Allen Wood.

Comme le nom du groupe peut le laisser penser (theocracy correspond à théocratie en français), les thèmes abordés dans les textes sont portés sur la religion, et essentiellement le christiannisme ; cela fait de Theocracy un des rares groupes aidant, par sa musique, à combattre le cliché satanique assimilé au metal [1].

Leur deuxième album est sorti le 21 Novembre 2008 en Europe, le 26 au Japon et le 6 Décembre au Etats-unis. L'album a été salué par la critique. En 2010, le magazine HM Magazine a classé l'album 16ème sur 100 des albums de metal chrétien les plus importants de tous les temps.

Leur nouvel album As The World Bleeds est prévu pour fin novembre 2011[2].

Style

Contrairement au principal groupe de power metal américain, Iced Earth, Theocracy joue du power metal "à l'européenne", plus proche de style de Helloween, Stratovarius ou Gamma Ray[3]. Son style peut être décrit comme du power metal progressif intégrant des parties symphoniques épiques.
