L’USS United States (CVB-58) a été le troisième navire de la Navy à porter ce nom, mais il a été annulé pendant sa construction, alors qu'il devait être le premier d'une nouvelle série de cinq porte-avions.
Le 29 juillet 1948 le président Harry Truman a approuvé la construction de ces porte-avions géants.
La coque du premier des 5 programmés a été posée le 18 avril 1949 au Chantier naval Northrop Grumman de Newport News. Mais, le programme a quand même été annulé, l’USS United States n'a pas été terminé, et les 4 autres navires n'ont jamais été construits.
