Werburh

Werburh (ou Werburgh, Werburga, Werburge), morte le 3 février 699 à Trentham, est une sainte anglo-saxonne, sainte patronne de la ville de Chester.

Fille du roi Wulfhere de Mercie et de son épouse Eormenhild, elle passe l'essentiel de sa vie dans les ordres. Elle devient la quatrième abbesse d'Ely, après sa mère, sa grand-mère Seaxburh et sa grand-tante Æthelthryth.

Ses restes, tout d'abord inhumés à Hanbury, sont transférés à Chester au IXe siècle, qui devient le centre de son culte.
