Le débit binaire mesure une quantité de données numériques transmises en bits par seconde (bit/s, b/s ou bps).

Ses principaux multiples sont :

  • le kilobit par seconde (symbole kbit/s) équivalent à 1 000 bit/s ;
  • le megabit par seconde (symbole Mbit/s) équivalent à 1 000 kbit/s ;
  • le gigabit par seconde (symbole Gbit/s) équivalent à 1 000 Mbit/s ;

Le bit par seconde est principalement utilisé en informatique et dans les télécommunications, mais comme beaucoup des termes utilisés dans ces disciplines, son équivalent anglais bit rate (ou bitrate) est très souvent employé.

Le débit binaire est quelque fois indiqué en baud par abus de langage, lorsque le système de transmission code un bit par symbole transmis.

Exemples

On peut décrire la vitesse de transfert d'un modem, et le standard V.90 autorise des liaisons entre modems allant jusqu'à 56 kbit/s brut, sans prendre en compte les possibles compressions numériques.
