Royal Air Force Bomber Command

Le Royal Air Force Bomber Command (anglais pour « commandement des forces de bombardement de l'armée de l'air royale ») était l'organisation qui commandait les forces de bombardement de la Royal Air Force. Elle fut créée le 14 juillet 1936 à partir de la section de bombardement de l'Air Defence of Great Britain et fut absorbée par le Royal Air Force Strike Command en 1968. Sa devise était Strike Hard Strike Sure.

Le Bomber Command s'est illustré pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale sous les ordres de l'Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Travers Harris, dit "Bomber Harris", en détruisant une part importante du complexe militaro-industriel allemand. Il est également connu pour des opérations de bombardement stratégique de villes, notamment sur Hambourg et Dresde et de destructions de cible telle le cuirassé Tirpitz À cette époque, la majorité du personnel sous les ordres du Bomber Command n'étaient pas de la Royal Air Force ; beaucoup venaient du Commonwealth et de l'Europe occupée.

Le fer de lance des vols de bombardiers était composé de quadrimoteurs Halifax et Lancasters[1].

Les équipages de bombardiers de ce commandement eurent de très lourdes pertes. Sur les 89 119 hommes d'équipages, 48 876 furent tués dont 450 parmi les 10 510 faits prisonniers. Au total, seul 27 % des effectifs survécut à un tour de 30 opérations.

12 726 avions furent détruits dont 928 à l'entraînement.

Lors de l'après-guerre, le Bomber Command contrôlait les bombardiers nucléaires. Le 23 mai 1963, la V-Force, surnom de la force de bombardement donné car le nom des trois types de bombardiers commencé par cette lettre, était affectée officiellement au Commandant Suprême des Forces Alliées en Europe pour la mise en œuvre de la désignation de cible, la planification et la coordination des missions nucléaires, ce qui était l’équivalent du SIOP de l’OTAN .
