Boniface II, né à Rome et d'origine gothique, 55e pape, du 22 septembre 530 au 17 octobre 532. C'est un saint chrétien.
Biographie
Il avait été désigné par son prédécesseur Félix IV pour éviter les troubles qui accompagnaient régulièrement les élections. En fait, il se produisit le contraire. Boniface II était soutenu par le parti goth. Le parti byzantin lui opposa Dioscore qui avait depuis trente ans une influence bénéfique sur les papes successifs. Dioscore meurt le 14 octobre 530, évitant à l'Eglise romaine un nouveau schisme.
Boniface se dévoua en faveur des pauvres en temps de famine et fit construire le monastère du Mont Cassin.
La rédaction de la première biographie des papes remonte à cette époque; cela deviendra par la suite le Liber Pontificalis
Après un pontificat de 2 ans et 1 mois, il est inhumé dans l'ancienne basilique Saint-Pierre, dans les Grottes vaticanes.
On a de lui une Lettres à Saint-Césaire d'Arles, dans les Epistolae rom.pontificum par laquelle il confirme les actes du second concile d'Orange de 529.
