Le magasin Selfridges

Le Bull Ring est une zone commerciale de Birmingham en Angleterre. Elle est une caractéristique importante de Birmingham depuis le Moyen Âge, où elle servait de place de marché. Elle a depuis été transformée en centre commercial deux fois: dans les années 1960 puis les années 2000.

L'actuel centre commercial ayant ouvert ses portes le 4 septembre 2003, abrite, entre autres, le magasin Selfridges qui possède une architecture très innovante reconnue internationalement. Il est l'œuvre du cabinet d'architecture Future Systems. Il est le plus grand centre commercial européen, s'étendant sur une surface de 110 000m², supérieur à la surface de 26 terrains de football accueillant chaque année en moyenne 36.5 millions de visiteurs. Il possède un toit en verre d'une superficie de 7000m². Il abrite un des quatre grands magasins Selfridges, les autres se trouvant à Londres, Manchester, et Trafford; et la deuxième plus grande agence de Debenhams, qui s'étale sur 4 étages. Par conséquent, le centre commercial a été un énorme succès, attirant les commerces du monde entier, incluant des enseignes de New York.


Histoire

Le marché débuta légalement en 1154 lorsque Peter de Bermingham, un propriétaire local, obtint une Charte royale du Roi Henri II d'Angleterre King Henry II. Initialement, un marché du textile commença à se développer dans la zone et fut mentionné dans un document pour la première fois en 1232.
