Elle est la fille de Betsy Enid Arnella (née James) et Ronald Urlington Pounder. Elle a fait ses études en Angleterre et s'installe aux États-Unis en 1970, où elle a fait d'autres études à Ithaca College. Pounder fait ses débuts d'actrice dans le film Que le spectacle commence (All That Jazz)
(1979).
