Carl Sandburg en 1955

Carl August Sandburg, né le 6 janvier 1878 et décédé le 22 juillet 1967, est un poète, historien, écrivain américain d'origine suédoise. Il est né à Galesburg, dans l'Illinois, de parents suédois, et est décédé à son domicile, à Flat Rock en Caroline du Nord.

Il fut un journaliste, écrivain, biographiste et poète à succès; au cours de sa carrière, il remporta deux fois le Prix Pulitzer, l'un pour la biographie qu'il fit de Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years), et l'autre pour l'un de ses recueils de poésie, The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg.

La plupart de ses poèmes, comme son poème Chicago, ont pour thème la ville de Chicago, qu'il connaît particulièrement par son travail de journaliste-reporter au Chicago Daily News et au Day Book.
