Rudolf Carnap (18 mai 1891 - 14 septembre 1970) était un philosophe allemand puis américain et le plus célèbre représentant du positivisme logique.

Né à Ronsdorf, il fit des études de physique et philosophie à l'université d'Iéna (où il rencontra Gottlob Frege) et à l'université de Freiburg où il fit sa thèse sur l'Espace avec le philosophe Bruno Bauch.

En 1926, il partit prendre un poste à l'université de Vienne et joignit le Cercle de Vienne fondé par Moritz Schlick. Il y rencontra aussi Wittgenstein, qui visitait parfois le Cercle.

En 1928, Carnap publia Der logische Aufbau der Welt, en français "La Construction logique du monde", où il continuait le projet de Bertrand Russell de fonder toutes les connaissances sur la logique et un langage phénoméniste (la base des vécus élémentaires). Cet ouvrage, parfois qualifié de "classique ambigü", contient un certain nombre d'éléments qui resteront dans l'œuvre ultérieure de Carnap : l'importance de la logique, l'idée que la philosophie est la construction de langages scientifiques débarrassés de toute métaphysique, l'unité de la science, etc..

En 1929, il écrivit un manuel de logique Abriss der Logistik. Carnap écrivit plusieurs articles et ouvrages. Deux textes méritent d'être cités, tant ils éclairent sur la période viennoise de ce penseur : "Le dépassement de la métaphysique par l'analyse logique du langage" et "La Syntaxe logique du langage". Ces deux ouvrages, respectivement publiés en 1930 et 1934, optent pour une même conception : la philosophie est une activité linguistique, proposant une analyse syntaxique des langages, pouvant discriminer entre science et non-science. Une des idées de Carnap est alors que les problèmes métaphysiques ou philosophiques sont des erreurs syntaxiques à dissoudre, des énoncés ou des questions dénués de sens. En 1930, Carnap et Reichenbach fondent le journal Erkenntnis. En 1931, Carnap fut nommé à Prague où il resta jusqu’à son exil pour les États-Unis en 1935. Rappelons que le Cercle de Vienne était très engagé pour la démocratie, et que les conditions politiques d'alors, la montée du nazisme, contraignirent ses membres à émigrer et se disperser. C'est durant cette période qu'il rencontra le jeune Willard Van Orman Quine qui offrit à Carnap le moyen de s'exiler aux États-Unis. Commença alors avec Quine un débat riche et divers sur leurs positions épistémologiques respectives, dont un des points d'achoppement reste l'acceptation d'une division des énoncés scientifiques entre énoncés analytiques a priori et énoncés synthétiques a posteriori [réf. nécessaire]. Carnap souscrivant à cette vue, Quine non.

Aux États-Unis, il devint professeur à l'université de Chicago où il demeura de 1936 à 1952 où il publia de nombreux textes de sémantique et de logique modale. Puis, il partit à Princeton et en Californie à UCLA où il se consacra à la philosophie des sciences et à la logique des probabilités.
