Ceiba pentandra, le kapokier ou bois coton, est une espèce d'arbre de la famille des Bombacaceae selon la classification classique, ou de celle des Malvaceae selon la classification phylogénétique.

C'est un grand arbre des zones tropicales, originaire de Java, d'Amérique du Sud, d'Amérique centrale et d'Afrique. Sous le nom de « Ceiba », cet arbre est symbolique dans la mythologie maya.

On utilise les poils fins et soyeux recouvrant ses graines pour la production de kapok.

C'est pourquoi on l'appelle également « fromager » car ses fruits sont très gros et couverts de cette substance duveteuse.
