Charlie Chan

Charlie Chan, détective américain d'origine chinoise est un personnage de fiction créé en 1925 par Earl Derr Biggers. Il est le héros d'un grand nombre de romans, d'une douzaine de films, de bandes dessinées, de feuilletons radiophoniques, de dessins animés et de jeux de société. Tout d'abord sergent de la police d'Honolulu, il est marié et a quatorze enfants. Plutôt corpulent, il ne manque cependant pas de grâce dans ses mouvements.

Le détective Chan est un personnage passif et patient, capable de passer outre les préjugés raciaux, démontrant ainsi sa tolérance. Il n'est ni agressif ni trop autoritaire. Engagé à servir le peuple, c'est un homme bon et poli qui ne pose aucune menace. D'origine chinoise, il incarne à merveille l'homme de couleur ayant réussi à s'intégrer dans la société américaine. On l'entend par ailleurs souvent prononcer divers proverbes, marques de sa culture chinoise. Ses fautes grammaticales et son accent chinois font de lui un détective unique en son genre.
