Whip (politique)

En politique, un whip ou chief whip est le membre d'un parti politique élu au parlement dont le rôle est de s'assurer que les membres du parti sont présents lors des votes à la chambre et suivent les consignes données par les chefs du parti.

Le terme apparaît pour la première fois au Royaume-Uni. Il est utilisé actuellement dans les parlements britanniques, canadien, américain, malais et australien.

Le mot whip (fouet), est emprunté à la tradition de la chasse à courre au renard, un des chasseurs ayant pour tâche de contrôler la meute.
