Les phénols sont halogénés très facilement à sec aux positions ortho- et para- non occupées dans le cycle benzénique. Le phénol lui-même est transformé par le chlore, d'abord en un mélange d'ortho-chlorophénol et de para-chlorophénol, puis en dichlorophénol -1,2,4, puis en trichlorophénol -1,2,4,6 ; la pentachloration nécessite la présence d'un catalyseur (AlCl3). Par exemple, le 2,4-dichlorophénol, solide blanc qui fond à 45 °C, est utilisé comme intermédiaire dans la fabrication d'autres composés. Autre exemple: 2,4,6-trichlorophénol. Les dioxines apparaissent lors de la combustion incomplète de divers dérivés aromatiques chlorés, ou au cours de réactions secondaires lors de la synthèse de chlorophénols.
