Christian Andreas Doppler

Christian Andreas Doppler (Salzbourg, 29 novembre 1803 - Venise, 17 mars 1853) était un mathématicien et un physicien autrichien, célèbre pour sa découverte de l'effet Doppler.

Biographie

Après avoir étudié à l'Université de Vienne, Doppler devient assistant-professeur dans cet établissement en 1829. Ce poste n'étant pas renouvelé, il envisage un temps une émigration vers les États-Unis. Il renonce à quitter son pays après avoir été nommé à Prague en 1837, puis à l'École polytechnique de Vienne en 1849. En 1850, il fonde l'Institut de Physique de l'Université de Vienne dont il est seul professeur et le premier directeur. Atteint d'une affection pulmonaire, la tuberculose, il quitte ses fonctions en 1852.

L'œuvre scientifique

Son travail scientifique est varié : optique, astronomie, électricité… Sa publication la plus célèbre a été présentée le 25 mai 1842 à l'Académie royale des sciences de Bohème et a pour titre Sur la lumière colorée des étoiles doubles et d'autres étoiles du ciel, utilisant l'effet Doppler. Ses calculs étaient erronés, le décalage réel de la fréquence lumineuse étant trop faible pour pouvoir être détecté à l'époque. En 1846, Doppler publie une correction de son travail initial où il tient compte des vitesses relatives de la source de lumière et de l'observateur.
