Clint Hallam, né en Nouvelle-Zélande, a été le premier greffé de la main. Cette opération a été effectuée par Jean-Michel Dubernard, chirurgien à Lyon. L’intervention a duré 13 heures. Cette intervention a posé des problèmes d’éthique importants. Elle a été critiquée par le professeur Jean-Louis Touraine.
En effet, il s’agissait d’un cas de greffe en l’absence de risque vital, qui n’a pas apporté plus au patient qu’une prothèse, en l’absence de mobilité importante obtenue de la main greffée. Le personnage de Clint Hallam a augmenté la polémique, en raison de ses antécédents judiciaires, et d’un comportement intéressé à sa participation aux médias. Les effets négatifs des immunosuppresseurs l’ont incité à faire amputer la main greffée le 3 février 2001.
Cette expérience a toutefois permis de constater qu’une greffe de membre se traduisait par un transfert de cellules souches (provenant de l’intérieur des os) qui en favorisait le maintien.
