Covenant est un mot anglais (emprunté au français) signifiant convention, et comme en français, avec le sens de serment, accord, alliance, etc. et avec celui d'assemblée. Le mot est notamment utilisé pour désigner plusieurs épisodes historiques.
Histoire
- Les Covenantaires, ou Covenants, mouvement religieux issu du presbytérianisme de l'histoire de l'Écosse et, de façon plus mineure, de celles de l'Angleterre et de l'Irlande au XVIIe siècle. Ils tirent leur nom des accords nommés :
- « National Covenant » (1638), visant à préserver la Réforme de toute innovation issue de la couronne britannique ;
- « Solemn League and Covenant » (1643), traité d'alliance entre les covenantaires d'Écosse et le Parlement d'Angleterre lors de la guerre civile.
- (en)Covenant d'Ulster (1912), une vaste pétition contre le Home Rule (autonomie) de l'Irlande.
