Il fut choisi au 4e tour de draft par les San Diego Chargers en 2005, il était le 130e choix de la draft. Darren est petit (1m68), ce qui pourrait être vu comme un désavantage, mais c'est justement cette petite taille qui lui permet de passer dans des petits espaces, très rapide avec un centre de gravité très bas, il est très difficile à contenir. De plus c'est un bon kick returner et bon receveur.
