Dorothy Thompson, née le 9 juillet 1893 à Lancaster (État de New York) et décédée le 30 janvier 1961 au Portugal, était une journaliste américaine au New York Herald Tribune; elle a été qualifiée en 1939 par le magazine Time comme l'une des deux femmes les plus influentes d'Amérique, l'autre étant Eleanor Roosevelt.
Elle a été mariée à Sinclair Lewis en 1928, le second de ses trois mariages (son premier était avec Josef Bard). Leur fils, l'acteur Michael Lewis, est né en 1930. Elle divorça de Lewis en 1942.
Affaire Grynszpan
En 1938, Dorothy Thompson prit la défense d'un immigrant germano-polonais en France, Herschel Grynszpan, qui avait assassiné le troisième conseiller de l'ambassade d'Allemagne à Paris, Ernst vom Rath, événement qui avait été utilisé comme outil de propagande par les nazis pour justifier les événements de la Nuit de cristal en Allemagne. Les émissions radiophoniques de Thompson sur la NBC, écoutées par des millions de personnes, entraînèrent une vague de sympathie pour le jeune assassin. Grâce à la création d'un fonds de défense des journalistes, plus de 40 000 dollars furent recueillis, permettant à l'avocat Vincent de Moro Giafferi de s'occuper de l'affaire. D'origine allemande, elle condamne cependant le nazisme, qui avait pris pied aux États-Unis grâce au Bund germano-américain.
