Dungal de Bangor ou Saint Dungal, était un moine irlandais, né en Irlande et mort en 827, qui fut astronome de Charlemagne.

Biographie

Ce moine irlandais est formé à la brillante abbaye de Bangor (3000 moines)[1]. Comme de nombreux moines irlandais il part pour le continent d'autant que l'Irlande est en proie a des attaques répétées des vikings (l'abbaye de Bagor finira par être pillée en 824 dans un carnage qui fait 900 morts)[1]. Il est enseignant à l'abbaye de Saint-Denis en 811[2]. Dans une lettre, adressée à Charlemagne, il explique l'éclipse solaire de 810. Il utilise pour cela des théories astronomiques semblables à celles publiées par Nicolas Copernic 700 ans plus tard, en 1540[3]. Il exprime une vision héliocentrique de l'univers[2].

Il est ensuite écolâtre à Pavie. Il s'oppose en 827 à Claude, évêque de Turin. Ce dernier réfutait en effet l'orthodoxie de la vénération des reliques et des images[2]. Il fourni à la bibliothèque de l'abbaye de Bobbio 70 ouvrages, dont le l'Antiphonaire de Bangor[2].
