Synopsis

Pour améliorer la protection de l'État, une nouvelle loi sur les télécommunications est proposée aux Américains. Cette loi vise à donner plus de pouvoir aux autorités compétentes, comme l'utilisation de caméras de surveillance et l'écoute téléphonique, dans le but de garantir la sécurité de l'État, aux dépens des libertés individuelles.

Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), avocat et citoyen américain comme les autres, marié et père d'un petit garçon, reste sceptique lorsque sa femme (Regina King) lui répète que les autorités usent déjà de ces pouvoirs ; pourtant, il l'apprendra à ses dépens.

Vernon Square où Dean et Regina King sont écoutés à distance en place publique semble être un évident clin d'œil à Conversation secrète de Coppola, où une telle scène figure en introduction du film et lui sert de fil rouge. Cette impression est renforcée par la présence à l'affiche de Gene Hackman, qui ici comme dans Conversation secrète est un spécialiste des écoutes et occupe une cache dans un hangar désaffecté.
